Green Pod by Pushbike Parking

Last meeting (July) we explored the Green Pod. The attendees were The attendees of last month’s meeting were treated to a free tour of Penny Farthings Pushbike Parking Green Pod by its designer Mark Rossiter.

The prototype Green Pod at K Block at QUT Kelvin Grove features lockers and showers for use by commuters who travel by bicycle.  The pod is the size of a car space and yet provides a surprising amount of room.

Throughout the tour Mark explained the ingenious details of the pod which made the structure self-sustainable and functional for its users.

To me the most intriguing element of the pod was the self-cleaning showers which recycle the water and irrigate the surrounding landscape. The shower’s self-cleaning system activates late at night when the sensors detect no people in the pod.

The pod also features lockers that are optimally shaped for the contents of someone commuting on a bicycle.

The Kelvin Grove pod doesn’t contain bicycle storage inside it; instead it has bike racks outside. Mark has designed other pod options, which have bike storage inside them.

Pushbike Parking’s website has much more information and some visualizations of the pod in different potential scenarios. I look forward to seeing the pod all over Brisbane sometime in the future.
