How to PARK
1. MAKE or find a team You need 2-4 people to easily PARK. Friends, family, and workplaces make great teams.
Join a local cluster to organise spaces with other teams in your neighbourhood
. In 2008, clusters occurred in West End, Valley, UQ and Southbank
.
2. CREATE a theme and design idea
PARK(ing) spot can be transformed into almost anything!! Make people stop and enjoy your space. It should be fun and positive, and remember the original idea is also to educate, engage and inspire about important urban issues. Consider the themes in the BCC “Living in Brisbane 2026 Vision” and the type of city you dream of.
3. CHOOSE a location
PARKs can happen on-street, off-street, in private car parks, public car parks, and even multi-level parking.
See below for more information.
4. REGISTER! Register with us, so that we can map and promote your PARK to visitors.
5. PARK on the day
See belowfor more information.
6. SHARE the results, and VOTE for your favourite Brisbane PARKs
Remember to video and photograph your PARKs and send them to brisparkingday@live.com to be documented

Step 1. Safety BarrierA self-supporting boundary is important to provide a sense of enclosure and safety for people occupying your PARK(ing) space.
Remember all material must be within the lines of a parking space. It can not obstruct roadways or footpaths.
Step 2. SignsEvery PARK must have the Brisbane PARK
(ing) Day sign. It indicates that the space has been transformed into a PARK
(ing) space for public enjoyment.
Teams are also encouraged to adapt and create your own signage specific to your design theme and/or organisation. You can download our
logos to create your sign or use
our sign. Be prepared to provide people information.
Step 3. GroundcoverGroundcover is not necessary to all designs but turf was a strong element used in the original PARKs. Alternatives could also include carpet, fabric, astro turf, paving material.
Teams using turf will need to place a tarp down first to protect the roots and for easy clean up.
Step 4. Other StuffWhat you put in your PARK is up to your design team, but remember it has to be easily moved. You may have the following elements -
a) Seating/Furniture
b) Shade/ Plants
c) Display/Play
Step 5. Clean Up Easy construction and disassembly is a key design consideration. Make sure you have a plan to reuse, recycle, or donate the materials after your PARK
(ing) project is complete!
All organic material can be composted at
Northey St City Farm, Windsor.

Choosing a Location
You can PARK in any suburb of Brisbane. We encourage "local clusters" of people in the same suburbs to get together, share materials, have fun, create networks and make greater impact.
In 2008, Brisbane PARK(ing) Day was not approved by BCC and in 2009, we continue to negotiate. We will keep you updated.
ALL PARKers MUST READ THE FOLLOWING LINKS
1)
BCC Traffic Information 2)
Full BCC Parking/Traffic Local Laws 3)
Checklists and info on BCC Footway and Roadway Permits FAQs for guerrilla spaces- 1) How long can I PARK for?
Just like a car you should respect parking restrictions (unless you gain permits or negotiate private spaces). In a metered space it is an offense to continuously pay the meter and stay in the same spot beyond the maximum period - so if it says 2P you should move in 2 hours. Read the local laws.
2) Can I only PARK in metered car parks?
No. You can PARK in metered, unmetered, on street, off street, public, private, even multi-level car parks.
3) What can’t I do in a PARK(ing) space?
Any commercial uses. Under the Rebar creative commons copyright PARK(ing) Day is intended for non-commercial uses, and also commercial/food uses/footpath dining is a totally separate BCC licensing issue. Businesses like cafes can participate but should comply with their existing footpath dining permits. No sales or food in PARK(ing) spaces that are on street.
